Keeping
Drains Unclogged

Bio-Clean is a dry powder form of bacteria and enzymes.  You add to your drains once a month.  It will multiply quickly and feed on deposits in pipes and traps.  The material is organic so it will not harm pipes or fixtures and is also safe for sewer or septic systems.  It is available at most hardware stores.

Healthy for Life

Salmon

***GOOD MOOD FOODS***

You know diet can improve your health.  Did you know it can build a good mood, too?

Good mood foods stabilize your blood sugar which helps prevent spikers and plunges

that can leave you irritable and cranky.

On your plate, focus on high quality carbs (fruit, vegetables, whole grains) and high-quality protein (lean meat, dried beans).  Important nutrients are brain-influencing omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins D and B.

Foods specific for mood-boosters:

Oatmeal. Soluble fiber and slow-release carbs.

Lentils.  Good carbs, good protein.

Use in soups, stew, chili.

Chickpeas. (Garbanzos)  Try on a salad or

as a side dish.

Wild salmon and sardines.  Cannned is OK.

Try a recipe for:

~Wild Salmon Salad~

Everybody seems to have a favorite tuna salad recipe, but it is just as easy to create fabulous salads using canned salmon, which has much more omega-3 fatty acids than tuna. This recipe can also be made using leftover fresh salmon. Serve over a bed of lettuce or in a sandwich with whole wheat bread.

Makes 3 servings, about 1 cup each

1 can (6 ounces) wild salmon, well-drained (remove skin)

1 can (19 ounces) chickpeas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained

1/2 cup chopped red onion

1/2 red bell pepper, chopped

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

In a medium bowl, mash the salmon. Mix in the chickpeas, onion, and red pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil and vinegar. Pour the dressing over the salmon mixture and stir thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate up to 2 days.

Per serving:

339 calories, 19 g protein, 33 g carbohydrate, 14 g fat (2 g saturated), 26 mg cholesterol, 60 mg sodium, 9 g fiber; plus 203 mg folate (51% DV), 2 mg vitamin B12 (35% DV), and a hearty dose of omega-3s and vitamin D

Simple Home Improvements

          Autumn To-Do List

1. Insulate Outlets and Switches You may think your house is sealed up pretty tight, but electrical outlets and light switches are two places where heat can escape (and cold air can get in!).  Purchase foam switch and outlet gaskets from your local hardware store.  Unscrew the cover, press the foam in place, and replace the cover.  This is a very simple task for greater savings!

2.  Change your air filter on the furnace- The air filter in your air return duct helps keep the air in your home clean by reducing the dust, pollen and other debris that may be floating around your air ducts.  Be sure to replace  (or wash thoroughly, if you have a washable one) your air filter regularly.  BONUS TIP:  Write the date on your filter when you install a new one.  This way, there will be no doubt as to when you changed it last!

3.  Clean the gutters - Remove all those dead leaves to prevent clogs when the wetter, colder weather comes in.  Otherwise your drains will overflow and result in heavy ice buildup, which can sometimes damage gutters.

4.  Prepare your snowblower The time to discover that your snowblower is in need of repairs is not when you're faced with several inches of white stuff on the ground!  Start it up now, change the oil, repalce the spark plug, inflate tires, and spray the discharge chute with silicone to keep it from clogging.

Fireplace

FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY

~SAFETY TIPS~

We all enjoy sitting around a warm fire on a cold night, but a dirty chimney is a serious

fire and carbon monoxide hazard.

1.  Get an annual chimney check.  Have chimneys inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional chimney service.  This reduces the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote buildup and obstructions in the chimney.

2.  Keep treee branches and leaves at least 15 ft.away

from the top of the chimney.

3.  Install a chimney cap to keep debris and animals

out of the chimney.

4.  Build it right.  Place firewood or firelogs at the "rear" of the fireplace on a supporting grate.  to start the fire, use kindling or a commercial firelighter.  NEVER use flammable liquids.

5.  Keep the hearth area clear.  Combustible material too close to the fireplace could easily catch fire.

6.  Use a fireplace screen in front of the fireplace to catch flying sparks that could ignite or burn holes in the carpet or flooring.

7.  Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Place them throughout the house and check batteries in spring and fall.

8.  Never leave a fire unattended.  Before going to bed, be sure that the fire is fully extinguished.  Supervise children and pets closely when around the fireplace.

Pre-Inspection Benefits

At Shamrock we can help you with a limited pre-listing inspection which will cover the roof, flashing and chimney, foundation and structure (both interior and exterior) and your mechanicals- furnace and air conditioner.  Full pre-listing inspections are also available upon request.
